Ray and I  (Rebecca) started Books Brews & Dogs when we realized that fostering dogs in need was not feasible for us as it was to stressful on our dogs Perrin and Murphy (our Pitbull rescue). The idea was born out of our 3 favorite things; books, tea/coffee and our love of animals 

This is our story.

Our two dogs are our world. They have brought us such joy over the past two years. We met Murphy a few months after our Onyx ( a black cat I rescued from under a dumpster as a kitten ) passed at the age of 15. Perrin was just over a year old at that point and he became very depressed. So, we started to look for a new companion. Ray came across Murphy through Saving South Texas' Instagram page and began to follow his story. He fell in love with him. Two weeks after we discovered him on Instagram we learned that he was scheduled to be euthanized the day before Thanksgiving. So, we contacted the rescue and asked to meet him, scheduled meet and greets with him and Perrin and then brought him home for a weekend stay. We called  them on Sunday and Murphy never went back to the shelter. 

About 1 1/2 years later we came across an emergency foster needed post for another dog on the Saving South Texas Instagram page and we decided we would try to foster. She was scheduled to be euthanized on my birthday and we were in the middle of moving the day we picked her up, but I just couldn't not help.  While we truly enjoyed fostering and watching Nova come out of her shell as she learned she was safe, we noticed that our dogs were feeling more stressed and while being perfect gentlemen they were still struggling with the stress of a third dog who needed a lot of attention. We decided that as long as we both still have our 9-5's fostering may be to stress full for our dogs. Nova was adopted by a close friend a month into our fostering her and then a month later we started Books Brews & Dogs. 

Building Books, Brews & Dogs is our answer to being able to continue to help do our part in saving the lives of animals in need and providing for their basic needs (such as food) and medical care, by donating a portion of every sale (this is set aside and given to Saving South Texas at the beginning of the next month).  

We also use our social media platforms to help spread awareness for the animals in need in the local community. 

How we do our part for the community

Saving Books

We are working towards making our world a better place. We do what we can to help keep books from landfills by buying the books libraries are removing from their shelves, this also helps to fund our local libraries and give the community an extra chance to read those books. We also purchase new books from warehouses that buy the overstock and rejected books from the big box stores (Barnes N Noble, Target and more) these books are often in perfect condition or may have a page with a bent corner. the warehouse buys the books in bulk from the box stores and then sales them to smaller independent stores, such as us. 

Saving Animals

In a world where over 3 million dogs enter shelters each year, our efforts are a small but significant step towards change. By choosing Books Brews and Dogs, our customers not only indulge in their passion for reading but also join us in making a difference. Together, we are fostering a community that values both literature and the welfare of our furry companions. 

 

Supporting Local Small Business

While building our business we have met many other small business owners through our community efforts. It is our goal to be able to work with these other small business owners to provide a unique experience to our customers. We are currently in negotiations with a few local small businesses to be able to offer their products in our Blind Date with a Book packages. 

We are also working towards working with local indie authors. 

These efforts are still in the works and will take time as we are still very new and we want to ensure we are offering fair prices to both the businesses we are purchasing from and our customers. 

What we provide

We provide a unique experience to readers, giving them the opportunity to pick their own reading adventure while maintaining the surprise. Our Blind Date packages offer everything a book lover will need to enjoy a self care night and immerse themselves in a new adventure.
